This collection idea came to me during the last crawl so I’ve had some time to sit with it and figure out what it means to me. Although it is inspired by New Westminster, where I live and work, the idea and collection belongs to anyone who has watched a city change while falling in love with the pieces of it’s past.
My jewellery career started before moving to New Westminster, but it really took off once I established my own studio in New West. Joining forces with Lia at Good Omen and ultimately taking part in the crawl for 7 years has helped me grow as an artist and hone my skills. My clients may come from all over, but New West is where the magic happens.
This collection is an ode to New Westminster—a city where layers of history live alongside an ever-changing urban landscape. Inspired by its Victorian architecture, old neighbourhoods, railway tracks, bridges and waterfront, the collection celebrates the contrast between the old and the new.
To live in New West is to find companionship with the sounds of the skytrain, rail train, and the boat foghorns. To know that Victorian red and filagree pair well with graffiti and chain link fences. To constantly say: “Wow! Look at Mt. Baker today!”
And on that note, since it’s the 10th anniversary of my mountain rings, I have made 8 new mountain rings. One to represent the 7 years I’ve participated in the New West Crawl, and one extra for good luck and the adventures that are yet to come.
I will be taking a break from the crawl next year so I hope you will pop by and see me this year! I will be at Good Omen from 11-5 on both Saturday October 3rd and Sunday October 4th.
